Bulgogi Korean BBQ

The aroma of Bulgogi, the Korean BBQ, is mouthwatering. The marinade uses Asian pears and from the SpiceBreeze kit Korean chili flakes and a blend with shiitake mushroom powder and black pepper. The pear softens the meat and add a nice slightly sweetness.

Umami Makes the Difference

Shiitake is full of natural umami. Umami is the fifth taste, joining sweet, sour, salty and bitter.

Hot or Hotter

Korean chili pepper differs from standard chili pepper. It has a complex flavor and natural sweetness. If you want more heat, get a jar pickled cabbage, called Kimchi.

Create Your Lettuce Wraps

Place Bulgogi meat on a lettuce leaf. Top with kimchi. Close wrap. Enjoy!

For the marinade:

  • Mix 2 cloves garlic, 1 inch ginger, 1 grated pear (Asian pear recommended), 2 shallots, Shiitake powder (optional), 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce, 1 tbsp oil (sesame oil recommended), black pepper and Korean chili flakes to taste.
  • Add 1 lb thinly sliced meat (beef or lamb). Mix well.
  • Cover and let marinate in the fridge 2 hours to overnight.

Grill meat slices over high heat for a couple of minutes until the meat is done. Turnover frequently.

Serve meat, lettuce leaves, kimchi, and rice separate in the middle of the table.
