5 Side Dishes For Your Holiday Dinner

Do you have all dinner side dishes planned out? If not, find some quick and easy recipes for some delicious side dishes. Make just one or all. Your holiday dinner will be brighten with them.

Bratäpfel – Baked Apples

Your shopping list
  • 6 large apples
  • 3 tbsp rum
  • 1/2 cup nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts or your favorite nut), chopped
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
You might have
  • softened butter
  • brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 dash nutmeg

  • Preheat OVEN to 400°.
  • Cut the top of the apples and set aside. Core apples, but leave the bottom closed. Scoop out apple pulp to get enough space for the filling.
  • In a CUP, mix rum with nuts, raisins (optional), 1/4 cup brown sugar, 3 tsp butter and spices.
  • Fill apples with mixture and make outside a few holes with a fork. Cover with tops.
  • Spread the bottom of a BAKING DISH with some butter. Place the apples in the BAKING DISH. Bake in OVEN for about 30 minutes, depending how firm or soft you want your apples.

    OR: Place the apples into the BAKING DISH with your turkey about 30 minutes before the turkey is cooked.

Glazed Maroni

Your shopping list
  • 1 lb chestnuts, shelled
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
You might have
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 dash cardamom
  • 1 dash allspice
  • salt to taste
  • In a small POT, melt 4 tbsp butter. Add 1/4 cup brown sugar and stir over low heat until sugar dissolves.
  • Add chestnuts, broth and spices.
  • Cook over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes until the chestnuts are cooked. Stir occasionally.

Easy Red Cabbage

Your shopping list
  • 1 lb red cabbages, thinly cut
  • 2/3 cup red wine
You might have
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp caraway
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • salt to taste (1 tsp recommended)
  • In a POT, mix cabbage with orange juice, lemon juice, red wine, and spices. Mix well.
  • Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • Bring to boil and cook over low heat for 30 minutes until cabbage is tender.

Green Cabbage with Pomegranate

Your shopping list
  • 1.5 lb green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup pomegranate seeds
You might have
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • butter
  • 1 tsp caraway
  • 1 inch fresh ginger or 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • In a POT, heat 2 tbsp butter. Add onions and cook on low heat until onions turn translucent.
  • Add cabbage, orange juice, orange zest (optional) and spices.
  • Cover and cook over low heat for about 15 minutes.
  • Add pomegranates and cook for 2 minutes.

Spiced Cranberry Sauce

Fresh made cranberry sauce is much more delicious than from a can, and it takes no effort with this 3-steps-recipe.

  • 1 package (12 oz) fresh cranberries
You might have
  • agave syrup or honey
  • orange juice
Cranberry Spices

  • In a small POT, add cranberries and 1/2 cup water.
  • Bring to boil. Cook over low heat for 10-15 minutes.
  • Stir in agave syrup or honey and 1-2 tbsp orange juice until it tastes like you prefer it.
  • Want to give your cranberry sauce a new taste? Try one or two of the following spices. Add little by little and see how you like it.
